Professor Mel Ziman currently resides as a Professor and the Associate Dean of Research at Edith Cowan University, and hold an adjunct Professorship with the School of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, at the University of Western Australia.
In 2007, Professor Ziman established and continue to lead the Melanoma Research Group, and created the Huntington’s Disease Research Group in 2010.
Professor Ziman’s teaching and research focuses on increasing the understanding of developmental genes and their involvement in cell proliferation, specification and migration. This includes the study of their expression and regulatory functions in embryogenesis and in adults from several different phyla and centering on the delineation of the importance of developmental genes in specification of melanoblasts, in malignant melanoma cells and in neurogenesis.
Professor Ziman promotes science to the community, and gives talks and demonstrations to adults, school students and community clubs, focusing on melanoma awareness for the general public and skin cancer screening programs for organisations.
